Question

The baby’s umbilical cord accidentally touched water during bathing, causing inflammation and the formation of an abscess. The condition has not improved after several days. Is it possible for the navel inflammation abscess to absorb on its own?

Answer

Mild swellings caused by navel inflammation typically do not require excessive concern and can be treated with topical applications of white multi-bond ointment or red mold soft cream for regional anti-inflammatory therapy. If the abscess softens, consider piercing the skin to drain the pus, followed by cleaning and disinfection with povidone-iodine solution to aid in recovery. Avoid frequent touching of the affected area. If the abscess is large, it is recommended to seek hospital treatment for incision and drainage. Symptoms of navel inflammation include redness and swelling of the umbilical cord and surrounding tissues, thick or pus-like discharge, and an unpleasant odor. If not treated promptly, it may lead to abdominal wall cellulitis, abscesses, and necrosis, and bacteria may enter the bloodstream, causing sepsis. Such conditions cannot recover on their own.
