Question

My daughter is now 4 months old and experiences frequent spit-up. Sometimes, she still spits up an hour after feeding. I tried feeding her calcium acetate, but she dislikes it and instead spits up in large amounts. How should I handle this?

Answer

Infant spit-up is mainly due to the incomplete development of the gastroesophageal sphincter, which causes easy swallowing of air and increases intra-abdominal pressure. During and after feeding, the baby should be held upright on the shoulder and gently patted on the back to expel air, avoiding lying down immediately. Additionally, keeping the baby’s upper body slightly elevated and sleeping on the right side can reduce the occurrence of spit-up.
