Question

Why do newborns develop jaundice?

Answer

Jaundice occurs due to abnormal bilirubin metabolism, leading to an increase in serum bilirubin levels, which then causes the whites of the eyes, mucous membranes, and skin to turn yellow. Neonatal jaundice usually resolves naturally within two weeks after birth, but if jaundice persists past the one-month mark, it may be caused by breastfeeding factors. It is advisable for parents to bring the baby to the hospital for a bilirubin test as soon as possible to determine if medical intervention is needed and to avoid deterioration of the condition.
