Question

My baby is over 40 days old, and the doctor said they have a mild enteritis and prescribed medication. However, recently, their stool has become white strip-like, which seems a bit strange. What could this be? Should I be concerned?

Answer

The normal range of stool for breastfed babies is quite broad. Newborns who start breastfeeding may have bowel movements more than 10 times a day, or continue not to have bowel movements for 3-4 weeks, or have bowel movements only once, all of which are within the normal range. However, if a baby’s stool is very loose, there may be issues such as lactose intolerance or food intolerance. In this case, you should consult with the doctor about the baby’s growth and development and determine if further treatment is needed.
