Question

My baby has been normal during the time I’ve been taking care of him, and the ultrasound always says everything is fine. However, since birth, I’ve noticed that my baby’s skin is yellow all over, and it’s quite intense. The doctor said this is jaundice. How much jaundice is normal in newborns? Please help me understand?

Answer

The normal level of jaundice in newborns is about 3mg/dL. After four to five days of birth, the jaundice level will gradually increase and reach its peak, which is around 10-12mg/dL. As long as the baby’s jaundice level does not exceed 12, no treatment is necessary. By giving the baby more water, sunlight exposure, and approximately two weeks, it will disappear naturally. If considering this value for pathological jaundice, it should be cleared promptly.
