Question
When I gave birth to my son, I didn’t undergo a Down syndrome screening. Recently, I discovered that my baby has Down Syndrome, but only after the diagnosis was made, and no detailed treatment has been initiated yet. What causes Down Syndrome, and are there any treatment methods available?
Answer
Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21 or Congenital Down Syndrome, is one of the most common congenital defects caused by chromosomal abnormalities in children. Currently, there is no effective treatment method. However, long-term education and training can be provided to enhance the quality of life for affected children. Preventing infectious diseases and early administration of oral medications such as vitamin B6, r-tyrosine, and folic acid can assist in improving the child’s functioning. Surgery can also be considered for correcting deformities associated with Down Syndrome.
