Question
My cousin’s baby is almost one year old, and recently has been having trouble sleeping at night, crying before bedtime, and for a short period. After going to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor said it was Down syndrome. What are the symptoms of Down syndrome?
Answer
Down syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal disorders in humans and was the first chromosomal disorder to be confirmed. It typically leads to congenital moderate intellectual disability, primarily manifested as severe intellectual impairment, with an IQ usually between 20 to 60. The main symptoms of Down syndrome include intellectual disability, delayed physical growth and development, distinctive facial features (such as a flat face, slanting eyes, small and round ears), heart problems (such as congenital heart disease), and muscle weakness. Currently, there is no cure for Down syndrome, but prognosis can be improved through symptomatic rehabilitation training. The five-element four-diagram therapy can also play a supportive role. If you have more questions about Down syndrome or need further understanding, please consult a doctor.
