Question

How should one handle a newborn with jaundice and elevated bilirubin levels?

Answer

Newborns are prone to jaundice due to their underdeveloped liver enzyme systems. Generally, physiological jaundice appears 2 to 3 days after birth, reaches its peak between 4 to 6 days, and resolves spontaneously within 7 to 14 days. If jaundice appears too early, rises rapidly, has excessively high levels, lasts too long, or recurs, it is considered pathological jaundice. For cases with elevated bilirubin levels, hyperbilirubinemia treatment should be administered, with commonly used medications including Silymarin. Additionally, it is recommended to expose the baby to sunlight more often to aid in the resolution of jaundice.
