Question

Treatment questions for neonatal jaundice. My baby, just over a month old, is not sure when the jaundice started (due to poor room lighting). When she was about two weeks old, we noticed her face and neck turning yellow, with jaundice signs in her eyes as well. Although the yellowing has lessened, her whole body still appears yellow. How should we handle this? What is the best treatment method for neonatal jaundice?

Answer

Most babies develop jaundice within three days of birth, which is typically physiological jaundice and usually resolves naturally within 14 days without specific treatment, with a good prognosis. However, if jaundice appears within 24 hours of birth, is severe, progresses rapidly, or recurs after subsiding, it is advisable to consider the possibility of pathological jaundice. If you are uncertain about your baby’s condition, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly to avoid delaying treatment.
