Question

Can hand, foot, and mouth disease be contagious? I recently read in the newspaper that parents who take care of children with HFMD have also been infected, with blisters appearing on their hands. I’ve heard before that HFMD is specifically for children. Can adults also get HFMD?

Answer

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is an infectious disease caused by enteroviruses. There are over 20 types of enteroviruses that can cause HFMD. The most common are Coxsackievirus A16 and Enterovirus 71. Most cases occur in children under 5 years old, presenting with symptoms like mouth pain, loss of appetite, low fever, small blisters, or ulcers on the hands, feet, and other parts. While adults typically do not get HFMD, some individuals with weakened immune systems may be infected. It’s best to avoid contact with HFMD patients and frequently wash your hands.
