Question

A friend’s child has recently been hospitalized due to pediatric epidural empyema. What is pediatric epidural empyema, and what should be noted during treatment?

Answer

Pediatric epidural empyema is an infectious abscess formed in the epidural space outside the dura mater. The following should be noted during treatment:

  1. Correct fluid and electrolyte imbalances, strengthen nutrition, prevent hemorrhoids and complications.
  2. Appropriately apply nerve nutritional drugs to promote the recovery of nerve function.
  3. During the surgical process, if pus leaks from under the dura mater, perform puncture or enlarge the dural puncture along the puncture site, aspirate the pus and flush the abscess, avoiding forceful stripping of the arachnoid membrane to prevent inflammation from spreading or damaging the spinal cord.
  4. Postoperatively, conduct a spinal canal vertebral probe, and use the wound pus for bacterial culture
