Question

What are the causes of intellectual disability?

Answer

Some babies with congenital intellectual disability exhibit abnormal physical features, such as widely spaced eyes, slanted eyes, a flat nose bridge, the tongue often sticking out of the mouth, and drooling. Normal infants will deliberately imitate sounds at around 7 to 8 months old, call “Dad” and “Mom” around one year old, speak about ten words at 18 months old, understand simple instructions, and ask simple questions around 2 years old. They can express their thoughts at around 3 years old. If a baby lags behind by four to five months or even one to two years before showing these abilities, it should be considered a sign of intellectual retardation.
