Question

What should I do if my child has convulsions when they have a fever?

Answer

When a child experiences convulsions during a fever, parents should take the following steps:

  1. Press the child’s Renzhong Xue (located slightly above the midpoint of the Renzhong ) with your thumb to try to temporarily stop the convulsions.
  2. Combine physical cooling(cooling) methods, such as using a cold towel to moisten the head or placing an ice bag on the head pillow, or allowing the child to take a warm bath or use alcohol for wiping to cool down. This can help prevent further seizures.
  3. Stay calm and try to minimize stimulation to the child, avoiding loud shouting.
  4. Place the child in a flat lying position with the head turned to one side, loosen the clothing collar, and keep the airway open to prevent saliva and vomit from returning into the airway, which could lead to choking or aspiration pneumonia. Please note that these measures are for emergency treatment only. At the same time as the child is having convulsions, parents should seek immediate medical assistance and advice from a professional doctor.
