Question

When newborns develop jaundice, there is a divergence of opinions regarding the recommendation to drink glucose water. Some doctors advocate for its consumption, while others are opposed. In this case, is it suitable for newborns to drink glucose water?

Answer

For physiological jaundice in newborns, it is generally recommended to feed them a moderate amount of glucose water to promote metabolism and help in the early formation of a normal intestinal flora, thereby facilitating the excretion of jaundice. The concentration of glucose water is approximately 5%, and it should be slightly sweet after preparation or can be administered intravenously. It is suggested to give newborns a small amount of glucose water between meals. The frequency and quantity of feeding glucose water should be determined according to the baby’s preference and there is no fixed rule, mainly depending on the baby’s likes. For breastfed infants, usually no additional water supplementation is needed.
