Question
My baby’s skin is a bit yellow, and I suspect it might be high jaundice. What are the common symptoms of high jaundice in newborns?
Answer
Jaundice typically occurs within 2-3 days after birth, peaks between 4-6 days, and gradually subsides after 7-10 days. The duration is longer in premature infants, with no other clinical symptoms except mild loss of appetite. If jaundice appears within 24 hours after birth, with daily serum bilirubin levels increasing by more than 5 mg/dL or more than 0.5 mg/dL per hour; if the duration is prolonged, full-term infants for 2 weeks, premature infants for 4 weeks, or if it recurs and deepens or subsides, or if jaundice appears within one week to several weeks after birth, it is considered pathological jaundice.
