Question
My newborn baby is constantly troubled and doesn’t want to breastfeed. I heard it’s due to hypoxia. What should I do?
Answer
Newborn hypoxia is a severe threat to life and health. Doctors typically perform the Apgar score on newborns one minute and five minutes after birth. Under normal circumstances, a newborn’s total score is 10 points, with lower scores indicating more severe asphyxiation. For example, a score of 7 or above is considered mild hypoxia, which usually does not affect the prognosis; a score of 4 to 6 indicates moderate asphyxiation, which can recover within a short period with active treatment; scores below 4 indicate severe hypoxia and respiratory depression. In this case, emergency resuscitation and recovery by doctors are necessary to improve survival chances, otherwise, the newborn may not survive.
