Question

Yesterday afternoon, my baby started showing disinterest in breastfeeding or formula milk. He would eat for a while, then stop and start crying. Today, I tried breastfeeding him, but he seemed a bit nauseous and fell asleep after eating just a little. His sleep quality was also poor, and sometimes he even kept his eyes open. What should I do?

Answer

It’s quite common for newborns to have short or distracted feeding sessions, but if this issue continues, it’s important to be vigilant. Possible reasons include respiratory difficulty or incorrect breastfeeding posture by the mother, which may cause the baby’s nose to be blocked by the breast. In this case, gently press on the breast with your finger to allow the baby to breathe normally. Additionally, check if there are any foreign objects in the baby’s nostrils, and if so, gently wipe them with a moist cotton swab (note: do not insert the cotton swab too deeply). If the problem persists, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.
