Question

Jaundice in newborns is a common occurrence, but parents often feel confused about the normal range of jaundice levels. What is considered a normal level of jaundice for newborns?

Answer

The normal range for newborn jaundice is approximately 3mg/dl. The jaundice level will gradually rise to a peak between four and five days after birth, at which point it may reach between 10 to 12mg/dl. As long as the newborn’s jaundice level does not exceed 12mg/dl, no special treatment is usually required. It is recommended to provide the newborn with adequate fluid intake and to expose them to sunlight appropriately. Jaundice symptoms should naturally subside within about two weeks. If pathological jaundice is suspected, medical treatment should be sought promptly.
