Question

Six weeks ago, a child suffered a burn while using an electric heat pack. In the morning, blisters were discovered, and that evening, the blisters were pierced with a needle and calamine lotion was applied, followed by scab formation. However, the wound has not healed yet and continues to feel itchy, with hard scabs and pus oozing out. How should one handle the ulceration after a burn?

Answer

Ulceration due to infection is a common complication after burns. When dealing with burn infections and ulceration, appropriate measures should be taken based on the specific condition of the wound. For smaller areas of burn infection and ulceration, regional debridement can be performed to keep drainage open and to timely remove pus. Disinfection of the wound with iodine tincture and application of Bactroban or Mupirocin ointment at the affected area should be done, along with active dressing changes. This usually results in good outcomes.
