Question

My baby usually vomits after eating milk. Sometimes it happens immediately, and sometimes it’s before the next feeding. Ugh, especially at night. I’m almost asleep after burping, but the baby hasn’t burped yet. When does a baby stop vomiting?

Answer

Three-month-old babies have a small stomach capacity, and the lower esophageal sphincter has not fully developed. If the baby lies down immediately after feeding, milk can come out of the mouth, even vomiting all the milk just eaten. This type of vomiting is medically called regurgitation. Generally, no medication is needed. It is important to immediately remove milk from the mouth and nose to prevent aspiration. As the baby grows older, the symptoms of vomiting will gradually diminish. By the time you’re about six months old, the symptoms will basically stop completely.
