Question

Dear Parent, during the physical examination, it was mentioned that your baby has a slight issue with jaundice. How should one handle high jaundice in newborns?

Answer

Newborn jaundice can be categorized into physiological and pathological types. Physiological jaundice usually resolves itself within about half a month. If the jaundice level gradually decreases or first increases then decreases, it may indicate a pathological condition. High levels of jaundice can affect the development of the nervous system. If your baby’s jaundice index is 23, it falls into a higher range. It is advisable to take your child to a regular pediatric hospital for a follow-up consultation and undergo an ultrasound examination to confirm the patency of the bile duct system. If there is no abnormality in the bile duct system, professional jaundice treatment should be administered to clarify the relationship between jaundice and breastfeeding. At the same time, ensure your baby drinks plenty of water, promotes defecation, and aids in the metabolism of bilirubin substances.
