Question

My baby has been suffering from recurrent diarrhea for over a month. We’ve taken them to the hospital, but the tests didn’t show anything serious. They were given injections and still had diarrhea when they came home. It’s been five or six days, and there’s no improvement. We urgently need a solution.

Answer

Newborns have limited digestive abilities. If they consume food that exceeds their tolerance, it can lead to diarrhea. Due to differences in dietary habits, health conditions, and individual variations, some breast milk contains nutrients (mainly fats) that are more than what the baby needs, which can cause diarrhea, also known as “functional diarrhea.” If the baby has no other symptoms besides increased stool frequency, good appetite, no vomiting, and no impact on growth and development, it is not caused by disease. The stool will gradually return to normal after introducing complementary foods. There’s no need for the mother to worry too much.
