Question
How should neonatal jaundice be treated in a one-month-old baby?
Answer
The standard treatment for neonatal jaundice includes:
- Early onset (within 24 hours after birth);
- Rapid progression (daily increase rate exceeding 85 and 5U/mol/L);
- Overload (serum total bilirubin greater than 221umol/l);
- Delayed regression or recurrence (full-term delivery lasting more than 2 weeks, preterm delivery lasting more than 4 weeks);
- Total bilirubin exceeding 26mg/dL before treatment. If the baby’s blood bilirubin levels are normal, treatment may not be necessary. However, careful observation of the baby’s condition and family monitoring are required. If the baby’s limbs turn yellow, oral administration of Phyllanthus emblica with probiotics can be considered. Blue light therapy may be necessary.
