Question

My nephew was born on the third day and his yellowing is normal. Now on the tenth day, I went to the hospital for a check-up and conveniently measured his jaundice, and the cheek value was 22, and the forehead value was 18. How effective is blue light therapy for newborn jaundice?

Answer

Currently, we can only say that the jaundice level is close to the danger threshold. It is recommended to observe and use blue light therapy. Even with blue light therapy, it usually takes three days. Most full-term newborns will develop mild jaundice 2-3 days after birth, and the jaundice will become more obvious at 4-5 days, with the trunk and limbs also showing jaundice. After the 5th to 6th day, the jaundice will gradually decrease, and it will completely disappear by the 7th to 10th day. Currently, the degree of jaundice is not severe, and it has no effect on the child’s body; there is no need for special treatment at this time. An effective way to eliminate physiological jaundice is to feed the baby a mixture of glucose water, sugar powder, and water three to five times a day.
