Question

My baby failed the hearing screening on the left ear during the hospital check-up. The doctor said it might be caused by amniotic fluid blockage. We are advised to come back for a follow-up check when the baby is 42 days old. I would like to know what are the possible reasons for a newborn failing the hearing screening?

Answer

This situation generally suggests a review after a period of time. After all, the child is still very young. If there is some secretion or meconium in the ear at birth, the ear will be fine. But in the testing process, signals usually do not occur. The on-site screening requires very strict selection of the testing environment: the environment should be relatively quiet, with noise not exceeding 40 decibels, preferably in an isolated room. If the baby does not cooperate, it may also lead to a failed screening.
