Question

My child was born 20 days ago. Lately, there have been red spots on their face, which disappear after a few days and then reappear in another area. It’s said to be toxic erythema. Is the newborn uncomfortable with this condition?

Answer

Newborn toxic erythema is a transient skin condition that usually appears within two weeks after birth. Most cases appear within four days after birth, with a few occurring at birth, and the latest recovery is within two weeks. It can occur on any part of the body, but it is more common on areas that are under pressure, such as the buttocks, back, and shoulders. The skin lesions can fade within a few hours and then quickly reappear after 7 to 10 days of spontaneous healing. There are no other systemic symptoms. Considering it might be facial eczema, it is recommended to bring the baby to a local regular hospital for a dermatological consultation and receive treatment accordingly.
