Question
Does neonatal jaundice easily recur after blue light therapy?
Answer
Neonatal jaundice is clinically categorized into three types: pathological jaundice, physiological jaundice, and breastfeeding jaundice. Only pathological jaundice can lead to bilirubin encephalopathy, a brain injury that is irreversible. For pathological jaundice, blue light therapy and corresponding medication treatment are usually required. Physiological jaundice and breastfeeding jaundice generally do not require medication. If a newborn has jaundice and undergoes blue light therapy, recurrence is typically not a concern. However, if blue light therapy is ineffective in treating the jaundice, blood transfusion treatment may need to be considered.
