Question

I gave birth to a girl via cesarean section. During the delivery, the newborn had mild cyanosis on her face. Oxygen was administered immediately for 5 minutes, which alleviate ed the condition. However, there was still a bluish tint around her mouth. After returning to the ward, oxygen was continued to be administered. What are the symptoms of neonatal cyanosis?

Answer

Cyanosis is one of the common symptoms in the neonatal period, caused by a decrease in hemoglobin levels in the newborn’s capillaries beyond a certain level. It is generally believed that when the concentration of reduced hemoglobin in neonatal arterial blood exceeds 50g/L, cyanosis can be visually detected for the first time, with the lips and mucous membranes showing signs of cyanosis. Cyanosis can be caused by various factors, including lung diseases, heart diseases, blood system diseases, and central nervous system diseases, as well as in a few normal newborns. The main cause of cyanosis may be mild or life-threatening.
