Question

During my 40th week of pregnancy, an ultrasound showed a fetal cerebellar cisterna hygroma measuring 1.4 millimeters, with all other items normal. Will the baby’s intelligence be affected after birth? How should it be treated? I am very worried, and it has been three days since I haven’t given birth yet.

Answer

It is recommended to undergo further examination as a single ultrasound cannot confirm hydrocephalus. Consider having another ultrasound for dynamic observation. If the measured values of both mother and child exceed the normal range, it can be determined that the fetus has hydrocephalus. For neonatal intracranial hemorrhage and meningitis, active treatment is required. Avoid complications such as cerebrospinal fluid circulation obstruction and malabsorption due to meningeal adhesions. In severe cases, surgical shunting may be necessary.
