Question
My baby is now 4 months old and has been diagnosed with external hydrocephalus. The doctor has recommended a follow-up brain CT scan in 2 months. Can vaccinations such as pertussis, HIB, and the DTP be administered before the brain swelling subsides? He has already received these vaccinations in the first three months; will this have any impact on him?
Answer
Hello, your baby can be vaccinated. External hydrocephalus is primarily caused by maldevelopment of the brain and is not due to a brain circulation problem caused by trauma or infection. External hydrocephalus is usually discovered before the baby reaches 6 months old, and treatment is recommended as early as possible. It is best to undergo intervention treatment before 6 months to ensure normal growth and development in the future. Most cases of external hydrocephalus will resolve around the age of 2. In a few cases, the hydrocephalus may transform into true hydrocephalus, which is an enlargement of the ventricles. It is recommended to monitor the changes in the ventricles dynamically.
