Question
I am the mother of a female baby, who is over 20 days old. Her skin has turned yellow, and the doctor said it’s high jaundice. I went to the hospital and checked, and it was 12.1. The doctor asked me not to feed her milk the next day for a blood test. I’ve done the four-pronged prenatal test and liver function test. What should I do about the high jaundice?
Answer
Newborns typically experience physiological jaundice for about a month after birth, but there can be individual differences. Bilirubin levels increase, causing the skin and sclera to turn yellow. Generally, if it’s only in the blood, it has little impact on the child in the short term. Currently, the doctor is considering whether it’s pathological or physiological and thinks a liver function test is necessary to check. However, these numbers are about right, so further checks are needed to further identify and exclude diagnoses. Please follow the doctor’s orders!
