Question

My baby was born on the 13th. Since she just gave birth, she hasn’t been able to breastfeed him yet. I’ve been giving him formula milk mixed with water using a bottle. After drinking it for a couple of days, however, now that there is breast milk available, he doesn’t want to drink it anymore. Should I just keep giving him formula milk? What kind of formula milk should I give him instead?

Answer

If the baby refuses to drink formula milk, you can try diluting the formula, waiting for the baby to finish drinking it, and then rinsing back to the original amount to prevent nutritional deficiencies. You can also purchase a nipple that is close to breast milk and soft, and try feeding with a spoon. In this case, the mother should boost her confidence and persist with breastfeeding, even if there is little breast milk, allowing the baby to suckle at the breast to stimulate milk production during lactation.
