Question

My baby was recently diagnosed with jaundice and is currently undergoing blue light treatment. I’m worried about potential side effects. What are the specific main symptoms of neonatal jaundice?

Answer

The eyes and body will appear yellowish. Mild cases usually resolve within 2 to 3 days, with the skin color returning to normal by the 5th to 6th day; severe cases may spread jaundice from the head to the whole body, and vomiting matter, cerebrospinal fluid, etc., may also turn yellow, lasting for more than a week. Particularly, some premature infants may continue for up to 4 weeks, with their stool still yellow and urine not containing bilirubin. It is important to observe carefully and seek blue light treatment when necessary. Typically, it will resolve spontaneously within half a month. Patients should develop regular lifestyle habits, persist with treatment, and maintain a light diet and engage in aerobic exercise to enhance their immune system and reduce the risk of illness.
