Question

A newborn has a red spot on the right side of their forehead, initially resembling a pimple, but it gradually expands and contains fluid. The doctor diagnosed it as a hemangioma. What are the causes of facial hemangiomas?

Answer

The causes of facial hemangiomas are diverse. Firstly, congenital factors are one of the common causes, often related to adverse habits during the mother’s pregnancy, such as smoking, drinking, or prolonged exposure to computer radiation. These factors may lead to the fetus having a hemangioma at birth. Secondly, mechanical damage is also a factor; during the infant period or even in the embryonic period, external stimuli such as collisions can cause hematopoietic stem cell mutation, leading to tumor cell formation. Lastly, in a very few cases, hemangiomas may form due to viral infection after injury. This usually occurs after the skin is damaged, with the virus entering the blood vessels, causing blood cell mutation and ultimately forming a hemangioma.
