Question

Our child is over two years old and can only say simple things like ‘Dad’, ‘Mom’, doesn’t concentrate well, points to what they want instead of speaking, and doesn’t listen to adults. We’re worried it might be pediatric intellectual disability. What are the symptoms?

Answer

The symptoms of intellectual disability include: at 1 month, not following a red ball or moving person with their eyes, no response to sounds; at 3 months, still not able to follow a person with their eyes, unable to laugh out loud, not smiling at people proactively; at 4 months, unable to recognize relatives; at 6 months, no response to their name; at 7 months, unable to recognize strangers, not producing ‘da-da ma-ma’ sounds without intention, unable to actively grasp objects with both hands; at 9 months, unable to imitate sounds, not showing welcome or goodbye gestures, not using hands to point at common items or people; at 1 year old, not knowing how to cooperate when getting dressed, and not calling out ‘Dad’ or ‘Mom’ proactively.
