Question

The patient has a barefoot fracture with mild bone stimulating pain, occurring approximately 8 hours ago. What measures should be taken to ensure the patient’s comfort? Should the coated medication be continued?

Answer

For a fifth metatarsal fracture, if the fracture is not severe and the position is good, it usually only requires cast and external fixation. If the fracture position is poor and there is significant displacement, internal fixation treatment is needed, with the common method being Kirschner wire fixation. Approximately one and a half months later, if the fracture position is good and there is a small amount of callus growth around it, the Kirschner wire can be considered for removal. If the fracture position is poor, it is recommended to continue using cast and external fixation and to avoid weight-bearing activities on the ground to prevent displacement of the fracture.
