Question

What are the dangers of Down syndrome?

Answer

Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, primarily manifests as small eye fissures, wide eye spacing, slanting outer canthi, flat nose, small ears, frequent mouth opening with drooling, short and wide neck, intellectual disability, slow growth and development, accompanied by anomalies, and hand transpositions. The main dangers are associated with anomalies. Mental retardation and growth delays are also primary manifestations. Currently, there is no effective treatment method; mainly comprehensive measures are adopted, including medical and social services, for long-term patient education, and daily attention to infection prevention. It is recommended that parents undergo chromosome testing to prepare for the birth of a healthy baby.
