Question

Dear Doctor, my son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy shortly after birth, and there were no abnormalities found during the pregnancy check-up. Our family’s financial situation is limited, and we have already invested a considerable amount in treatment costs. Is it easy to treat pediatric cerebral palsy?

Answer

Pediatric cerebral palsy is a condition that is difficult to completely cure, as it is caused by congenital or acquired brain disorders that leave residual issues. There is currently no specific medication for treating cerebral palsy, and treatment mainly focuses on symptom management. For example, for the involuntary movements of athetosis, low doses of Antan can be considered to alleviate symptoms. In cases of muscle spasms, medications such as Baclofen, Botulinum Toxin (Botox), or Dantrolene can be used to reduce muscle tension, increase joint range of motion, and improve motor function. If epilepsy is also present, antiepileptic drugs should be used for treatment.
