Question
My son is just 6 years old, and his teacher has been reflecting that he doesn’t pay attention in class, doesn’t fit in with others, and lacks self-control. I haven’t paid much attention to it before, but after the teacher’s reminder, we went for a check-up and found out he has ADHD. But I’ve always lived with him, so why did he get it?
Answer
Genetic factors may be involved; some parents may have shown hyperactive traits in their youth, or twins may both have this condition, indicating a possible genetic influence. Additionally, some may experience mild brain damage after birth or at birth, such as hypoxia or asphyxia during the perinatal period, or minor brain damage from conditions like meningitis or encephalitis in infancy. Another factor could be environmental influences, such as the mother’s exposure to toxic substances during pregnancy, such as smoking or alcoholism, which can lead to hyperactive symptoms in children after birth. Another factor is postnatal education; possibly due to different family educational environments and different educational approaches to children by different individuals.
