Question

Dear pediatrician, could you please explain the standard for hearing screening in premature infants?

Answer

The standard for hearing screening in premature infants is as follows: Under normal circumstances, the hearing threshold should be below 25 decibels, which falls within the normal range. A hearing threshold between 26 and 40 decibels is considered mild hearing impairment. A hearing threshold between 41 and 55 decibels indicates moderate hearing impairment. A hearing threshold between 56 and 70 decibels is classified as moderately severe hearing impairment. If the hearing threshold is above 90 decibels, it is considered severe hearing impairment. If the screening results are not satisfactory, it is recommended to undergo a recheck (review) after three months.
