Question
The newborn’s jaundice has decreased to over 100, and they were just discharged today. They occasionally have a sensation of twitching and their breathing movements are sometimes very large. They don’t seem very comfortable when sleeping. Before being hospitalized, the jaundice level was over 400, but there were no issues with twitching or breathing. Is this normal?
Answer
In this case, it’s still advisable to consider the baby’s previous jaundice condition. Although the jaundice has decreased, it hasn’t fully recovered yet. It’s beneficial to expose the baby to more sunlight as it aids in further jaundice fading (disappearance). Pay close attention to the baby’s mental state. It’s normal for the baby to have unstable sleep, as this is due to the incomplete development of their nervous system. The baby’s occasional double breaths are also normal; they don’t necessarily indicate twitching. I suggest you continue to observe. If the baby is feeding well, is in good spirits, and has normal bowel movements, then there should be no major issues with the baby.
