Question
On the first day of the newborn, there were a few small bleeding spots on the buttocks. A blood test was recommended. The results are as shown in the image. We will be discharged tomorrow, as the baby is eating and drinking normally, not feverish, and sleeping well in all aspects, so no further checks were done. The hospital recommends a recheck. Do we need to, or should we wait a few days and come back if there are any abnormalities?
Answer
Generally speaking, newborns have elevated white blood cells and neutrophils due to their mother’s influence, and if the level is not particularly high, there should be no problem. However, if the child has elevated white blood cells with other symptoms, it may require anti-infection treatment; elevated white blood cells and neutrophils are mainly due to bacterial infections. Children with mild bleeding tend to have lower platelet levels. In this situation, parents are advised to bring their child for a further review and pay attention to feeding. It is okay to observe changes in the child’s body temperature.
