Question
What qualifies as normal baby stool?
Answer
A baby’s meconium, the first stool, is usually passed within 2 to 4 days after birth and gradually transitions to yellow, soft stool. Breastfed babies have stools that are golden yellow and pasty, with bowel movements ranging from 1 to 4 times a day; formula-fed babies have stools that are pale yellow and uniformly thick, with fewer bowel movements, about 1 to 2 times a day. If a baby’s stool frequency is excessive, appears watery or like egg whites, or contains mucus and bubbles, and sometimes has a foul odor, it may indicate nausea or vomiting and should be noted.
