Question
What are the causes of neonatal cerebral palsy?
Answer
Cerebral palsy is typically defined as a non-progressive brain injury or brain abnormal development occurring between pre-birth and one month after birth, leading to central nervous system motor disorders. Clinically, it is characterized by abnormalities in posture and muscle tone, muscle weakness, involuntary movements, and ataxia. Prenatal factors are the most common, including genetic and chromosomal diseases, congenital infections, brain malformations or developmental abnormalities, fetal brain ischemia and hypoxia leading to periventricular leukomalacia or basal ganglia damage.Brain injuries occurring from the beginning of labor to one week after birth, such as hydrocephalus, neonatal shock, intracranial hemorrhage, sepsis, or central nervous system infection, ischemic hypoxic encephalopathy, may all lead to cerebral palsy.
