Question

My 80-day-old baby has an uneven head shape. There’s a noticeable bulge. Should I ignore it, place a book underneath, or wait until he learns to crawl and the lump goes down on its own? Could there be any issues with a bulge on the back of the head?

Answer

This is a normal shape during the process of skull development. There’s no need to worry or treat it. Just let nature take its course. Allow the baby to alternate between lying on their side and back to sleep. Keeping the head from sleeping on one side is sufficient. As they grow older, the fat under the scalp becomes less noticeable. The lump in question is the posterior fontanelle. It won’t disappear on its own; it’s a part of the skull. If it does, you might have something to worry about. If you want to improve the head shape, you can use a pillow, but don’t worry too much about other things.
