Question

The child currently has hydrocephalus. Is it related to family heredity? How difficult is the treatment? If it cannot be cured, what impact will it have on the child?

Answer

Hydrocephalus does not have a hereditary tendency; two children with the disease may be related to environmental factors. Early treatment usually has a better prognosis, whereas delayed treatment may cause more brain tissue damage and a poorer prognosis. External hydrocephalus is a special type, known as benign or self-limiting hydrocephalus. If the child’s growth and development and intelligence are normal, clinical observation is mainly conducted. If the child’s head tilts backward, attention should be paid to observation.
