Question
Now, the doctor is giving the child an injection of brain activator and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The child has been born for 5 days, and we are very worried. Please ask the expert: How long does this treatment method need to be continued, what kind of follow-up treatment is needed, and will there be any sequelae? Thank you, expert.
Answer
This requires treatment based on the cause. Hydrocephalus is mostly congenital. A small part is caused by tumors and other factors. They are categorized into non-surgical treatment and surgical treatment. Generally, mild hydrocephalus should be treated with non-surgical methods. This primarily involves dehydration therapy and comprehensive supportive treatment. Surgical treatment is applicable to cases of intraventricular hypertension (over 250mm water column) or when non-surgical treatment fails. Severe hydrocephalus includes a head circumference over 50cm, cortical atrophy thickness below 1cm, and severe functional disabilities and deformities. The surgical outcome is not promising.
