Question

What types of cosmetics can a mother use during breastfeeding if the baby is under two months old? Can she perform facial mask treatments? Are spot-reducing products suitable? Additionally, if the mother applies makeup and comes into contact with the baby, causing the baby to develop eczema, is there a connection between the two?

Answer

It is not recommended to use cosmetics during breastfeeding. Cosmetics often contain ingredients such as fragrances and pigments, and poor-quality products may even contain harmful substances like excessive mercury. If these substances are frequently absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream, they can then be passed into the breast milk, potentially harming the infant’s normal growth and development or liver and kidney function. Moreover, since infants’ skin is extremely delicate, they are bound to come into contact with the mother’s cosmetics during close contact, which may trigger skin allergy symptoms.
