Question
My baby is 5 days old, and I feel like the baby is a bit yellow. The doctor said it’s fine, most newborns have jaundice. They suggested exposing the baby to more sunlight. I want to ask where is the best place for my baby to be exposed to sunlight for the jaundice?
Answer
Expose your baby to natural light sources. Try not to keep the room too dark. You can bring your baby closer to the window where there is natural light. Natural light has all wavelengths. Exposure to natural light aids in the excretion of bilirubin. When the outdoor sunlight isn’t too strong, such as around 10 AM, you can take your baby outside. Try to expose your baby’s skin as much as possible, but be sure not to wipe their eyes, keep them warm, and avoid catching a cold.
