Question

My baby was discharged three days after birth, and at this point, the skin on the baby’s face has been yellowish. I’m not sure what’s going on. The elders at home say the baby has jaundice. I want to know, what is a jaundice level of 197?

Answer

Hello, this parent. If your baby has jaundice, it is a normal phenomenon. Most babies will have jaundice within 32 days after birth. Typically, full-term infants’ jaundice will decrease to normal within 2 weeks. If the child is about seven days old and the jaundice does not increase after the blue light therapy is stopped, it can also be discharged for observation. If breastfeeding is stopped for 3-4 days during the jaundice period, the jaundice can significantly decrease, with bilirubin levels dropping by more than 50%. If breastfeeding is resumed, the jaundice may not reappear, or if it does, it will not reach the initial level.
